Estimate model: your score reflects the share of a difficulty-weighted total you answered correctly, mapped onto a realistic adult vocabulary range (roughly 6,000-40,000 active words) informed by published vocabulary-size research. Passive vocabulary is projected above active vocabulary because recognition typically exceeds confident recall and use. The more words you quiz on, the more accurate the result: the 50-word quiz samples twice as many words per difficulty tier as the 25-word quiz, and the 100-word quiz samples four times as many, both reducing the effect of lucky guesses. How many times you take the quiz matters too — with a few hundred words in the bank, retaking it soon after a previous attempt raises the odds you are recognizing specific questions rather than demonstrating broader vocabulary, so a single fresh sitting is the most representative score.
This is a directional estimate, not a validated psychometric test: it samples from a curated bank of a few hundred words across five difficulty tiers, not the full dictionary. Other vocabulary tests often report a different number for the same person, partly from different sampling and partly because some count inflected word forms separately while others count word families as one entry. Treat this as a rough compass, not a certified score. Definitions are concise editorial definitions aligned to standard dictionary senses.
